Steel cut to order at Burnett

Steel, Burnett’s largest-selling item, is cut to customers’ order at the Burnett Salvage yard.

“Cutting steel to order is a service that isn’t always easy to find,” said Carolyn Warren, Burnett Salvage president. “We’ve found customers really like the convenience; it saves them a lot of time and lets them put their steel to use quickly.”

Steel carried by Burnett Salvage includes:

  • New, used and surplus
  • I-beams
  • Square tube steel
  • Pipe, angle and channel in 20-to-40-foot lengths

“Sometimes we can cut steel while customers wait,” Warren said. “It all depends on what they’re buying and it helps if people call ahead to check our inventory and tell us what kind of steel they need, when they need it, and we can plan for cutting their steel after the purchase is made.”

Burnett has been in the steel business for more than 40 years. For information about cutting steel to order, call the salvage yard at 637-3996.

Landscaping items big Burnett sellers

Brick and railroad cross-ties are two of the popular landscaping items available at Burnett Salvage.

Outdoor fix-up tasks are less expensive for customers making use of Burnett’s inventory of thousands of bricks and hundreds of cross-ties.

Burnett recently sold more than 50,000 bricks to a Louisiana brick company for use in reconstruction work along the gulf coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. However, Burnett will sell a single brick to a customer if that is all he or she needs.

“Whatever the customer needs, that’s what we have” said sales manager Marvin Green.
Brick comes in various colors and qualities, Green added.

For information, call 637-3996.

Buy, sell or trade at Burnett Salvage

Burnett Salvage is always on the lookout to buy used building materials – steel, doors, windows, cabinets, garage doors – almost anything in good condition that can be re-used.

“One of our big sources of salvage are kitchen and bathroom cabinets along with doors and windows people replace when they remodel their homes,” said Marvin Green, sales manager. “We buy salvaged steel from industrial sites and other facilities that are being renovated.

Green is responsible for checking the condition of salvaged items and for setting Burnett’s purchase price.

“It’s best if people with salvaged items call and make arrangements to bring it here for us to see,” Green said. “Selling salvage to us is a way for people to be paid for items they can’t use rather than pay to have it hauled away to a landfill where it doesn’t do anyone any good.”

Burnett a source for cast-iron bathtubs – and more

Burnett Salvage Yard frequently has cast-iron bathtubs available for sale, along with sinks, bathtub and shower combinations, commodes and other household items.

Sinks and commodes are usually in good supply and vary in quality from institutional to high-end. Cast-iron tubs are available periodically. Call ahead for information.

Salvage shopping advantages – and tips

Jill Florio, Living Simply Editor for the women’s publication “BellaOnline,” gives these helpful Intenet suggestions for salvage yard shopping:

“Remember that a bit of creativity will go far, too – old cabinets can be reused in the garage to store sporting goods and boxes of holiday things. Old drawer pulls can be removed from anything you find and brought home for your own bureaus. Rickety shutters and orphaned doors can be turned into those oh-so-trendy and expensive movable screens by screwing on a few hinges. Wrought iron gates can be set in front of mirrors, cut to fit, to become a one-of-a-kind, gorgeous "heirloom" showpiece.”
